finished 1 min video!

So heres my finished video I've edited it better made the train go a little faster and put in some better typography from my research. Wish i coulda made the tunnel work but hey ho!

typography research best ones to use -

I looked into what kind of style they used in silent films as mike mentioned it in the final crit. I found these screen shots which lead me to look into photoshop and i found this font which i thought would suite my film best

I picked my font off these designs - heres what i chose, i like it :)

turns out i can't use my god damn tunnel after all.

So after all my time i've spent making tunnels in photoshop for my video Matt tells me today that i can't use them because i didn't film it with green screens and if i wanted to use what i had now I' d have to animate a mask in adobe after effects which i have NO IDEA how to do. Matt bless him showed me abit on how to do it today and i took a few screen shots to show a tiny bit of what id have to do and why it won't work.
So, heres the tunnels i painstakingly made in photoshop to drop in final cut.... ( thanks to chris 2nd year who told me i could do that when actually you can't! :P ) next time i think i'll ask Matt or Mike
To be honest i don't think they look that bad, i think i did a pretty ok job if i would have been able to use them.

chris edited out of it below with a wacom tablet and photoshop

after effects what Matt tried showing me

heres when i tried drawing my own tunnel to drop in but then i thought of the better idea to edit in the one i captured on camera and use my wacom tablet and crop and eraser tool in photoshop to create something more realistic.

making my 1 min instructional video better...

So, to make my video better I'm gonna photoshop a tunnel into the actual shot, i'm gonna try create one in illustrator and photoshop based off a new roadrunner cartoon.
I remember watching the old roadrunner cartoons and loving them, i found this new roadrunner clip off youtube. Comparing it to the old one you can see how much animation has changed and come along.
The face, colours and landscape are more appealing, everything seems more life like, more real.
Here's an old clip of roadrunner, where he catches him! :O!

and heres the new 3D animated cartoons
i also picked these next two clips to focus on the tunnels, to see how there illustrated and placed into the shots. They always seem to be placed on the right hand side of the camera shot, which mine is too.
(skip to 1min 50secs for the tunnel scene)

see below another vid i found of the painted on portable hole, where coyote paints on a tunnel and roadrunner runs down it. It made me think because my video is humorous anyway why not add a cartoon feel to it. The whole point of it is to be funny and silly so why not?

here's one of the clips i'll need to edit in the tunnel and i'll do this through the entire video.
I've used this screenshot to measure the position and height the tunnel should be.

i found this one which was way too small

then this one where the lorry was in the way a little bit

this one was perfect so i screen shotted it and dragged it into photoshop where i positioned it correct and the height and everything.

i noticed then that Chris looked as if he was looking down the tunnel the wrong way or the tunnel was the wrong way around for the direction of the track and dolly track so i flipped the image.

i put the two next to each other to show the difference, as you can see it looks much better and like it fits.

heres after finished flip and height and length adjustments.
What i'm going to do now is base mine off this and create a new tunnel in illustrator then place it into the shots.

1 minute instructional video - CRIT

Here's my finished piece after shooting it all and editing it all together.
- This is the video i showed in the final crit, i'm going to do some tweeking in final cut pro and photoshop to make a tunnel so he's not looking at just a black curtain before hand in.
I remember mike pointing out that a tunnel should be put in there and tom's comment of how the train takes a while to 'hit' Chris.
For now here's the crit piece.

black and white silent film music

So where to find the music from. Seen silent films so i know what i'm looking for -
an upbeat comedy feel. A Charlie Chaplin feel to it. Here's some clips i found of the kind of music i want.

I was told about this free music sight royalty free music so i had a look and it was just what i was looking for, all you gotta do it type in a key word and it comes up with loads of tunes or you can search by genre.
I found silent film songs by Kevin MacLeod including, the chase, gold rush, olde timey, trouble and others. Here's a link to the website and to the one that i chose best in the end.
http://incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/index.html?keywords=gold+rush&Search=Search
I chose gold rush because as it's described its humorous and bouncy. I played it whilst watching my video to see if it could fit and it worked perfectly, it even ran the correct amount of time 47 seconds.

silent & black and white films

The first thing that i thought about when i decided i was gonna do trains was silent movies.
The music popped into my head and the old style frames with writing on instead of sound.
So i started to look around on the internet for silent films and what kind of shots they used, what music was used and what the style of the frames looked like. I found a number of interesting things, my favourite that i found was an adaptation of star wars where someone took away the music and put in a piano to go along with the drama of the scene, they also added frames and writing in there and if i remember correctly, the frames say pretty much what luke and vader said in those scenes.
As a fan of star wars i enjoyed watching this, i thought it was a quirky idea which worked well. the crinkly camera effect was added and the camera moved up and down as if someone was holding it not quite steady enough, which is what the old black and white silent films did too. Here's the clip -

notice in the film above the frames used how they look i took this style and looked around the internet for a template of this kind of frame which i found from a girls blog.
See created a black and white silent frame slide for anyone to use.
here's a jpeg of the frame slide. I downloaded it from the internet then opened it up in photoshop,
then i edited it and added my writing in the traditional white text.
I think I'm going to change the style of the writing to a bit more old silent style, mike pointed out in the final crit presentation that the style of writing didn't really fit if i want to go for the old silent film look.

1904 - The Great Train Robbery

We got told about this clip in lesson so i wrote it down to research later, apparently because this was such
an early silent film the people that went to see this at the cinema ran out of it screaming cause they thought the train was going to hit them, people had never seen anything like it.
Knowing this makes me appreciate film even more, knowing how it was and how it is today.
I think people take it for grated and say somethings shit when it's not.
It's only been a hundred and ten years since people ran out screaming and today we have these amazing special effects and animations which make you sit back in your seat at the cinema now with your mouth open thinking shit me, i wanna do that.

Speaking of amazing special effects i went to see the new sherlock homes movie and it was amazing. I don't normally say this because it never normally happens but the 2nd film was actually better than the 1st.
Wasn't bored for one second and the visual effects were stunning, was on the edge of my seat the whole time wanting more. Here's a clip from it, if you haven't seen it - GO NOW!

AWESOMEEEEEE!!!!

I found this clip to of laurel and hardy, i'm putting this up mostly cause i just love them and haven't seen 'way out west' in years. That film was FU-NNY.
I've also put it up to show the style of black and white films. The crinkly sound effect in the background and the film music at the end. Love it :)

finished storyboard for my project

mock up's of my storyboard and floor plans

here's my quick sketches of my 1 min instructional video, these are just a simple mock guide of what i want to achieve, i'm gonna create a much neater, timed and actually finished storyboard. Just wanted to put this up here to show the progress.

Again a quick floor plan of where everything should be and where i'll shot my camera angles from and the equipment i'll use.

above- the floor plan of where I'll be at Morley train station.
Mike always reminds us about safety and permission to film haha, so i'm gonna have to take that into consideration too. I think I'll be fine at Morley station, trains go by so fast and its not manned that no one notices anything.

camera angles and shots research.

I researched into camera angles and shots to help me whilst i was filming i found a good set of youtube vids talking in detail about angles shots and techniques.

start - digital film 1minute instructional video

Idea's

I did a little spider diagram just putting some of my first thoughts down on paper. I like the idea of origami and how to roll a cig best. I'm gonna search youtube looking at some vids that others have done on instructional videos.

here's some vids i found from the net

In one of our inductions me and chris were messing around with the track and dolly and i had an idea to pretend they were train tracks. So i got chris to lay down and pretend that a train was coming.
I liked this idea best straight away and took loads of different angles and shots of him telling him what to do, how to react and move etc...
I then thought that i could put a tunnel in later where the black screen was and add a humour factor to it as chris and i had a laugh doing it and it looked really funny.
Here's a photo from the induction i took, my idea is to go to morley station where theres a tunnel film afew trains going past and edit it as if chris is gonna get run over :)
