Avengers Assemble

As soon as i saw this trailer i was counting down the days till i could see the film, i was disappointed how Thor 2 hadn't been released so it wouldn't make sense how Thor had got back to earth but thankfully marvel had included to explain this in the film which i love in films - the little details.
Marvel also include things from other films in there films such as captain america's armour in iron man, black widow in iron man and Tony Starks dad in captain america - the list goes on.
From start to finish the suspense was great, a lot of action was including and the introduction to the characters from when they have evolved from there films was great to see.
They absolutely hit the nail on the head for realism with the characters and there emotions.
A lot of great one lines were said which had the crowds laughing hysterically which is great to see in an action movie, sometimes when people try and do this it doesn't come out right and i was thankful that i wasn't cringing in my seat thinking why marvel WHY.
The special effects were top notch too, every fight scene was smooth and visually stunning to the last detail, I would highly recommend this film to anyone who is a fan of marvel and those that are not, it's a great watch for all with a great balance of brilliant actors, intriguing storyline and overall just plain cool.

Movie staircase

Unity Web Player | movie staircase

I wanted to make a virtual room of pictures of movie title sequences and a few posters going down a spiral staircase to make the user feel the same way movie title do. For example catch me if you can title sequence makes you feel lost and trapped like you can't get out. You walking down a spiral staircase vertigo style and when you get to the bottom you go back up to the top it creates the same feeling. That your trapped and lost, can't get out etc. Through this way i've shown that i understand fully how title sequences make you feel and how they do this, i've also put in title sequence planes on the walls so you have to guess what title sequence is from what film, it's fun :)

CRY FEST - :'( Music in Disney Dreamworks and Pixar

*grabs box of tissues*

I find it fascinating how disney come up with such catchy heart warming songs that everyone of any age could sing along too and love. I'm proud to say that i have an itunes full of dreamwork's, disney and pixar songs which i listen to regularly.
Obviously the animation needs to be there too but what i'm focusing on in this blog is how the songs make you feel, without the song the animation could not create that feeling where your tummy's in your shoes and a lumps in your throat.
I put up quite a few of my favourites up here because i just have way too many to choose from. I've watched Randy Newman talk about Jessie's song on 25 pixar magic moments, unfortunately i couldn't find this video online for some reason but he talks about the simple fact that its the tone of the piece that matters. The notes of the piano he plays mixed with some god damn good lyrics.
These are the things that make these scenes so memorable and such a huge part of a child's live, it teaches them what is wrong and right in such a beautiful way.

Jessie song lost out in the oscars in 2000 for best song but only lost out due to the fact that Phil Collins's - You'll be in my heart was released the same year. Such a shame because they both deserve an oscar

hercules - go the distance

This has to be one of my all time favourites -
Pocohontos - Colours if the wind
"Colors of the Wind" by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz was the 1995 Oscar-winner for Best Original Song from the Disney animated feature film Pocahontas. It also won the Golden Globe in the same category as well as the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Movie. The song poetically presents the Native American viewpoint that the earth is a living entity where humankind is connected to everything in nature.

The Prince of Egypt Soundtrack - "The Plagues" (Track 12)

You know better than I (from "Joseph King of Dreams"

Beauty and the Beast - Tale As Old As Time [HD]

Beauty And The Beast ~ Celine Dion & Peabo Bryson

Up: Love Story

Up is a good one to look at too as the whole story above doesn't have an narrative it's all music.
Which completely tells the story for you.
Have a watch and see how it makes you feel.
Pixar just know how to tug at your heart

© Copyright

The copyright lecture was actually quite interesting and quite appalling, the fact that people can argue over work so much is unreal. I understand that everyone has ideas and i agree ideas should not be stolen or copied completely it's just wrong and shows lack of imagination. But to be honest everything is recycled these days, there's so much on the internet and so much research to be done that it's very hard to have an original idea anymore because there's so many people in the world it's all been done and thought of before, the only thing to do is make something better.
We also learned the facts of copyrighting in this lecture the required things you have to do to copyright something and how you must ask permission ALL THE TIME to use someones work etc...
The main point of this lecture was to stress the fact that there are a lot of lawsuits out there and what you have to remember to do is always ask permission and always state when you have used someone else's work and give them credit for it. Also be carful with your own work too.

Here's my notes from mike's lecture-

Being made redundant sucks- GAME

So recently the Game sager has affected me quite a lot because i worked for them, It came as quite a shock to me that we actually went under but the fact is it also was a shock to me in a good way. It made me realise how fragile the games industry can be and that things do and can change all of sudden and its what you learn and do with the skills later on.
It also taught me that when your the little guy so to speak a big company doesn't care about you at all and i was silly to think this looking back on it now.
When our manager came in and told us we were being made redundant he was quite patronising and obviously did not care about our lives or jobs at all. We weren't even given a full proper reason as to why we were losing our jobs there we just rumours being past around all the colleges, the most we got were i'm not too sure, you'd have to take it up with head office.
I learned invaluable experience and knowledge from game which i'm thankful for in the sense of games knowledge, the chance to play on a whole store of video games and the skills i learned dealing with customers in a game environment. It gave me great knowledge of industry's and how games are sold to game and to the public - how we had targets all the time that basically said SMILE! - SELL SELL SELL
which tells you a lot really that game tried to care about there customers but it all just came out backwards in the end because they didn't even care enough for there staff.
I met some great people through this job and currently have a friend i met working for ubisoft now so i still get freebies and information a lot which is good. I'm just gonna miss all the game freebies the most :)
Such a shame the game's over

My sceneography and Mood boards

Thought I'd put my sceneography up here and mood boards up here to show my initial idea. I'm feeling quite confident about my idea and the time i have to produce it in. I'm really liking this module and everything it involves. I'm going to start off by gathering as much research as possible and from this start designing some concept art/ floor plans/ perspective drawings etc... Then I'm fully ready to sit down with Unity and go crazyyyyyyy. I've taken some photos of the uni to get the feel of the textures and lighting that may be used. Later on I'm gonna look more into these by going round and taking close up photos of the floors/ walls etc and find some textures which would look like they would fit after a UFO had landed inside the college.

SCENEOGRAPHY – REFINED BRIEF

Name : Hollie Lowry

Project Brief :  UFO
Project Title : 'Should have rang in sick'

Broad Audience :  Mature

Mood / Atmosphere :
Scary/ Dark/ Death

Scene Description

Time of Day :             you can't see outside - who knows?

INTERIOR - a few rooms and hallway

Explanation / Backstory of Scene :
You thought it was going to be a normal day at college, you've fallen asleep in a lecture and wake up to a loud thud. Everyone around you has disappeared and something doesn't feel…. right.
You walk out of the lecture theatre and up the steps towards the cafeteria. You feel a drop on your shoulder, as you go to wipe it off you notice it's red, you start to panic. As you slowly muster the courage to look up, a horrifically tortured students torso impales you killing you instantly. the end.
just kidding :)
All the students have vanished, the alive ones anyway. Corpses are mangled and mutilated on the cafeteria tables as if they were the meal. Pipes are burst dripping with blood. And your gonna have to take the stairs cause the lifts not working. Something has crashed into the college. And something is roaming the halls.

creating my unity room and escalator in maya

A really helpful video i found off youtube - a quick way to make steps if i cant make a good escalator i think i'm just gonna do the vertigo one seen as there is only 2 weeks to do this in. No point in being over ambitious with it.

Essay research - film title sequences

Here's some of the title sequences i looked at most - watch them there's some really good ones here and artofthetile.com is a really good website to reference from, really interesting stuff.

EPIC soundtrack - Morrowind composed by Jeremy Soule

Being a huge Morrowind fan i decided to download the soundtrack, whilst listening to it at college i was flooded back with loads of memory's and missions from the game, so i've decided a good PPP blog is in order. These tracks show just how important music is to game's and how the style and tone of everything mixed together creates an atmosphere for the game world.
I found some technical information about the soundtrack and will post it up after this paragraph. I read through it and apparently the soundtrack was praised and critiqued for a number of different reasons. I would definitely be in the category of praise because personally i think it's pretty much flawless. The tone of the music fits everything in the game from a chase from a wolf to a stroll towards a sunset. The Morrowind theme tune is pretty much played a lot different ways through the 21 different tracks throughout the game, each as beautiful as the last. The only critical thing i agree with which i've found is that the soundtrack does only last 30minutes but to be honest the 3 years that i was playing it i loved the soundtrack and i don't remember getting bored of it or sick of it at any point. You get so immersed in the game itself that you miss the tracks sometimes until you properly stop and listen and i think thats why it works so well. It's not too over-powering but at the same time is matches visually beautiful landscapes with perfect music tone.
Here's what i found on the soundtrack - gutted Medal of Honour Frontline beat Morrowind - seriously!!???

'Morrowind
's soundtrack was composed by Jeremy Soule, a video game composer whose previous soundtracks for Total Annihilation and Icewind Dale had earned some acclaim from the gaming press. In a Bethesda press release, Soule stated that the "epic quality" of the Elder Scrolls series was "particularly compatible with the grand, orchestral style of music" that Soule enjoys composing "the most".[60] Outside Bethesda press releases, some have criticized Morrowind's soundtrack. In their reviews of the game, both GameSpot and GameSpy criticized the length of the game's soundtrack and praised its general production quality.[61][62] In the words of GameSpot's Greg Kasavin: "The very first time you boot up Morrowind, you'll be treated to a memorable, stirring theme filled with soaring strings and booming percussion. You'll proceed to hear it literally every five minutes or so during play."[62] Soule was aware of the problem, and chose to create a soft and minimalist score so as not to wear out players' ears.[63]

In a feature for Gamasutra, Scott B. Morton, although praising the music itself, declared that Morrowind's soundtrack did not work effectively with the game's gameplay, accomplishing little as an emotional device. Morrowind's soundtrack is ambient, with cues only for battle encounters. In Morton's view, the lack of variation, of response to the game's action, and of length—Morrowind's soundtrack is only 30 minutes long—leaves players detached from the game world.[64] Alexander Brandon, in another Gamasutra feature, praised Morrowind's soundtrack for its innovative instrumentation. In Brandon's opinion, its use of orchestral elements in conjunction with synthesized ones, and the use of what Brandon termed "the 'Bolero' approach", left the game's soundtrack feeling "incredibly dramatic".[65] In February 2003, Morrowind was nominated for the category of "Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition" at the 6th Annual Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences's Interactive Achievement Awards, but lost to Medal of Honor: Frontline.[66]
Morrowind also contained a fair bit of voiced dialogue; an aspect somewhat better received by the gaming press. Of note is Lynda Carter, television's Wonder Woman, promoted by Bethesda for her role in voicing the Nordicrace in the game.[67] Morrowind's race-specific voice acting received praise from some reviewers,[68][69] though was met with disdain from others, who disliked the discord between a culturally inflected voice spoken in an alien dialect and the grammatically flawless dialogue printed in the dialogue boxes.[20]'

Here's a few videos i found from youtube of the soundtrack i was gonna put it all on but i'll just select a few of my favourites :)

Nerevar Rising -

The Road Most Travelled - This one is my favourite along side Nerevar Rising. Brings back lots of memories of gameplay time :) I like how it mixes low and high notes to create a suspense and a quiet beating drum leading up to a fantastic version of the theme tune. I've found listening to the soundtrack it really helps me concentrate on my work too.

Context Of Practice - APPLY

So mike's just explained to us in more detail what to do cause i think we all were a little confused. We have to do the question what we did in the essay and take it and show that we've learned something from it.
Such as,

  • We could create a title sequence ourselves and apply to our audience in ways title sequences do
  • We could take a title sequence and recreate it demonstrating that you can change it's meaning so thats it's changed what it's telling the audience
  • You could do the same with a line of typography create a few of them and show different ways people would feel about the typography if you changed it, like how the audience would feel different if you changed for example the word 'Spiderman' in huge black and red letters to the word 'Spiderman' really tiny in pink letters. It wouldn't mean the same thing to the audience anymore
  • You could create a room in unity showing that you understand what a title sequence does, like how it makes you feel.
I think i've decided that i'm going to go into Unity and make a room either like mike suggested like vertigo and create that trapped and lost sensation with movie posters passing you by as you run by or i like the idea of catch me if you can. I have an idea to create a room and put two escalators in it where if you walk up one you come out at the other one like a portal, so your stuck in the room and you can't get out. Then at the bottom i'd have a blank sort of airport floor and a sign airport style that says terminal 1 - catch me if you can.
:) i really like that idea, just gotta not try be too ambitious seen as we only have 3 weeks to do it in.
Here we go!
Here's some mood boards i made up for idea's -

Hollie's list of 10 games you need to go and play RIGHT NOW or if you've played them play them again :)

I noticed annabeth put up a list of 10 games she suggest we play or shoulda played on moodle and it was really interesting to read and got me thinking what 10 games would i put up soooooo.
No order here but these were the ones that came to mind, it's made me wanna play on all of them all over again

1. Heavy Rain -

2. Fahrenheit -

3. From dust -

4. DragonballZ Budoki 3 -

5. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent -

6. Morrowind -

7. Crash Bandicoot -
